RF Generation Release List: Week of May 18, 2008

We may be in a different place, but it’s still business for usual for the “front page”. So, here’s your release list for this week. Shockingly, it’s a pretty damn good one…that is if you own a new-generation console. Sorry for all you bottom rowers, you all get the shaft this week. But if you have one of those newfangled consoles, get ready to bust out your wallet!

Playstation 3 Xbox 360 Nintendo Wii
  • Enemy Territory: Quake Wars
  • Haze
  • Singstar (Game only and microphone bundle. PS2 microphones will work on the PS3.)
  • Enemy Territory: Quake Wars
  • Lost Planet: Extreme Conditions: Colonies
  • Deca Sports
  • We Ski
  • Wii Fit
PSP Nintendo DS Playstation 2

The highlights this week are plentiful. First let’s start with what is bound to be one of the biggest games of the year, Wii Fit. Unless you’ve been living under a cave for the past year, you know that Wii Fit is Nintendo’s latest megaton casual game for the Wii. The $90 package includes the game and the Wii Fit Balance board, which is in essence a glorified bathroom scale that detects your weight and how you shift around on it. This allows for full body gameplay. For example, Wii Fit includes minigames that will have you dodging soccer balls, skiing, jogging, or even doing hula hoop. The game may look like gimmicky crap at first, but the Team Fremont Live: UK podcast (one of my favorites on the internet) reviewed it a few weeks back, and said that it actually does help you lose weight and it’s actually very fun to play; shocking because so many initial reactions to the game were extremely negative. Oh well, it’s going to be a HUGE seller for Nintendo and will guarantee that you won’t see a Wii until next year.

For those of us not interested in being active, there’s also Singstar for the Playstation 3 coming out. Singstar is Sony’s popular karaoke game that includes a wide variety of songs for you to sing along to. This new PS3 edition of the game, besides having some of the worst cover art ever, adds the ability to remove vocals, upload videos of you singing your favorite songs to My SingStar Online by using the Playstation Eye camera, and an extremely robust online store that will allow you to buy multitudes of songs for you to play in the game.

If you’re not interested in either, why not opt for Haze, a PS3 exclusive drug-induced shooter from Free Radical, developer of the Timesplitters series. This game revolves around a private military contracting firm named Mantel. The Mantel corporation has expertise in bio-medical research and has developed Nova-Keto-Thyrazine (aka: Nectar), a drug that enhances the performance of soldiers on the battlefield by increasing their speed, accuracy, response time, and awareness. On the other hand, the drug has a hallucinogenic effect that eliminates any of the horrifying sights of war such as fallen comrades, gore, dismembered limbs, etc. This drug makes for some very interesting battles, especially since you can inject enemies with huge doses of Nectar, causing them to lose control of themselves and start firing on their own people. If you have a PS3, check out the demo on the Playstation Store. It’s not the best demo in the world since the abilities you have to use Nectar are limited, but it should give you a rough idea of what to expect.

Check back next week for the latest releases…hopefully on our new server.
