Hey everyone, I just wanted to let you know that we’re trying very hard to come back online. Our host has run into some issues with setup and we are working diligently to rectify the situation and get the site running as soon as possible. At this time, I can only ask for your continued patience, and we hope to be back very soon.

We updated our nameservers to point to our real site. It may not be up at the time you access it. If you find that to be the case, take a deep breath, the site will be back in due time.
We may be in a different place, but it’s still business for usual for the “front page”. So, here’s your release list for this week. Shockingly, it’s a pretty damn good one…that is if you own a new-generation console. Sorry for all you bottom rowers, you all get the shaft this week. But if you have one of those newfangled consoles, get ready to bust out your wallet!
| Playstation 3 | Xbox 360 | Nintendo Wii |

| PSP | Nintendo DS | Playstation 2 |
| … | … | … |
The highlights this week are plentiful. First let’s start with what is bound to be one of the biggest games of the year, Wii Fit. Unless you’ve been living under a cave for the past year, you know that Wii Fit is Nintendo’s latest megaton casual game for the Wii. The $90 package includes the game and the Wii Fit Balance board, which is in essence a glorified bathroom scale that detects your weight and how you shift around on it. This allows for full body gameplay. For example, Wii Fit includes minigames that will have you dodging soccer balls, skiing, jogging, or even doing hula hoop. The game may look like gimmicky crap at first, but the Team Fremont Live: UK podcast (one of my favorites on the internet) reviewed it a few weeks back, and said that it actually does help you lose weight and it’s actually very fun to play; shocking because so many initial reactions to the game were extremely negative. Oh well, it’s going to be a HUGE seller for Nintendo and will guarantee that you won’t see a Wii until next year.
For those of us not interested in being active, there’s also Singstar for the Playstation 3 coming out. Singstar is Sony’s popular karaoke game that includes a wide variety of songs for you to sing along to. This new PS3 edition of the game, besides having some of the worst cover art ever, adds the ability to remove vocals, upload videos of you singing your favorite songs to My SingStar Online by using the Playstation Eye camera, and an extremely robust online store that will allow you to buy multitudes of songs for you to play in the game.
If you’re not interested in either, why not opt for Haze, a PS3 exclusive drug-induced shooter from Free Radical, developer of the Timesplitters series. This game revolves around a private military contracting firm named Mantel. The Mantel corporation has expertise in bio-medical research and has developed Nova-Keto-Thyrazine (aka: Nectar), a drug that enhances the performance of soldiers on the battlefield by increasing their speed, accuracy, response time, and awareness. On the other hand, the drug has a hallucinogenic effect that eliminates any of the horrifying sights of war such as fallen comrades, gore, dismembered limbs, etc. This drug makes for some very interesting battles, especially since you can inject enemies with huge doses of Nectar, causing them to lose control of themselves and start firing on their own people. If you have a PS3, check out the demo on the Playstation Store. It’s not the best demo in the world since the abilities you have to use Nectar are limited, but it should give you a rough idea of what to expect.
Check back next week for the latest releases…hopefully on our new server.
The New Server is in Build
I just want to inform those of you wondering when the site might be back that our Server is currently in the build process. Our host does things custom, which in the end might take a bit more time. As for when we might return, I am not in the business of mindless speculation, as such speculation only leads to frustration when the projected date of return is missed. There will be a lot of things that need to be completed, such as installing the necessary software to make the server run and then move the site over (the latter of which should be quicker since we’re already on this host).
I imagine some of you might be getting antsy and worried that this site is nothing but smoke and mirrors for the downfall of RF Generation. Ha. We’re not dead. Too many people have but their heart and soul into the site for it just to go poof. So, take a deep breath, relax, and enjoy the other things in life that don’t involve RF Generation. Play a video game. Go to a thrift store. Enjoy the weather. We’ll be back, and once we are you’ll have all the RF Generation you can want.
In case you are wondering if we’ll do anything to inform you that we’re back, we intend on sending out a mass email to our registered members once we’re back. Of those, I imagine 200 or so will bounce back because people used invalid emails. (Moral, update your email once we’re back) Don’t worry, if you’re a registered member, we’ll let you know of our return, or… you could just keep visiting RF Generation until the site is back. If it’s back, you’ll see the real site; otherwise, you’ll see this emergency broadcast.
Going to a dedicated server takes some effort. Those of you who frequent one of our affiliates may be aware of the fun associated with growth. But, in the end, everything works out. We can add new features, and in the process we will further cement our place as THE classic and modern video games database. Until next time, keep it tuned to channel three.
The Cynical Gamer #5: 512MB
So, believe it or not, but I am actually a gamer. I know, wow! The cynical gamer is a gamer! It may frighten you to know then that I do not own a 360 or PS3. Rather, I own that technologically inferior Wii. I used to think that was a bad deal, but then I realized that when I do play the system I am absolutely enthralled. Who’d a thunk it? Thanks, Okami! (and NMH, Super Mario Galaxy, Super Paper Mario, Metroid Corruption, and Twilight Princess). Truly, in the mounds of shovel ware, there are some winners.
WiiWare – how I am excited for this downloadable medium. Games like Eternity’s Child and World of Goo, in addition to Strongbad’s Game for Cool and Attractive People, certainly have my interest. On launch day (well, the day after actually), I decided to buy Lost Winds. It was a gamble for me, for it was developed by Frontier. Ugh. They developed RollerCoaster Tycoon 3, and that game crushed by top of the line laptop. (at least it was 4 years ago) So, I had low, and at the same time high expectations for the game. Turns out that the game is pretty darn good, but then, I noticed something, and it made me rather unhappy.
New Server
We’ve begun the process of getting a new server. It’ll set us back $90 a month. Exciting, and expensive times. Stay tuned for future developments and estimations for our real site’s return!
In case you are wondering, we’re sticking with our current host. He’s one hell of a support guy.
A Different Server
Well, there’s quite the deal regarding a server we could choose. AMD 64X2 4800, 2GB Ram, 120GB Hard Drive, those specs beat the pants off of the deal offered by our current host (120GB HD, AMD Sempron 3GHz, 1GB RAM). Without a control panel, they are essentially the same price. But, our current host would manage the server and do backups in the included price, while the host with the nice server would make those added costs.
Of course, we could build a server, host it at someone’s house and hope for the best.
It’d be a ridiculously slow connection, though. Power goes out, so does the site. Internet goes out, ditto.
What do we do, what do we do? Frustrating times, indeed.
Servers and Cost
Dedicated Servers are Expensive. Just to give you an idea of just how expensive they are, we got a quote from our current host for the cheapest server he has available. It costs $102 / month. That’s a bit much for us, and is a bit on the mind numbing side.
So, you (the RF Generation Community) need to help us figure out what we need. Is the site worth $102 / month, or are there better deals out there? Should we find a place that lets us build a server and then just rent rackspace / bandwidth? The upfront costs would be more, but in the long run it would decrease in costs. The truth is that we’re really wary of $102 / month, and we want to see what you guys think. We need some solution, but we want to make sure that we have the best solution.
Regarding this Blog’s Content
You might notice that there are posts on this blog other than those pertaining to the future and current situation of RF Generation. You see, a lot of people might show up here, and well, we’ll keep doing something while we are away from our true home. We might be down for a while, so we want to create a place that has a feel similar to RF Generation. You might see some gaming news. You might see a feature. You might get a rant from Tondog. But rest assured, if you wish to only see posts related to the future of RF Generation, I would subscribe to the Site News Tag.
We want this place away from home to feel like home. You could say we’re homesick, but hopefully some of you may keep us company while we wait for the real site to return. We’ll keep you posted on developments regarding our return to normalcy as I find it out.
Not specifically directed at anyone in particular (except the person who thinks this is a sick joke), but here is a definition of what a dedicated box is:
Dedicated Solution: Our site running on its own server not impacting other websites.
Let’s go over what dedicated solution is not:
- The end of RF Generation
- A cheap solution
- A Zombie Horde breathing down your neck.
- Guarantee to save 15% or more on Car Insurance
Of course, there are benefits to a dedicated box:
- Not screwing over others when our site goes down.
- Less likelihood of going down
- Should be faster
- Give us more freedom
- Allow for future growth
- Don’t have to worry about the site being suspended for long periods of time.
In case people think the site is gone let me stress this once again:
This is not the new home of RF Generation. This is just a blog to keep you, our community posted on developments and site issues, such as downtime. RF Generation shall return.
I hope that clears some things up. Until we’re back completely, keep it tuned here!
